The Ride - Port De Pollensa via Lluc Monastery to Sa Calobra and back.

This is a simple there and back route with a cyclists dream at the end, a five mile descent into Sa Calobra. An early start is advisable as Sa Calobra is a dead end and climbing five miles up a mountain road in the midday sun and searing heat is not advisable. The route follows the MA-2200, by-passing Pollensa and on to the MA-10. This beauty of a road climbs up through the mountains and you will not be disappointed. It is a little more barren and dry, but it its truly awesome. Over the next several miles, the road is undulating as the scenery becomes imaginative and stunning with mountain ranges, gorges and valleys. Eventually, after many false summits you will arrive at a junction that leads you the the Santuari de Lluc (Lluc Monastery) a monastery and pilgrimage site that was built in the thirteenth century and located in the Serra de Tramuntana. But more importantly to a dehydrated hungry cyclist, a cycling friendly cafe awaits your order. From the monastery the route continues over more dramatic scenery until you arrive at junction that bears left for Soller, you need to stay to your right. Look out for the little cafe hidden under the trees after the viaduct on the right next to the junction. There is now one more climb over Col dels Reis, through a cut out in the rocks and then you must stop. You will not believe what you are looking at. The view of the coast is one thing, the view of the twisting, snaking pristine tarmac road that defies all common sense unfolding before your eyes is a hallucinating mirage of excitment. This is a road to nowhere as nowhere is where you are going. Release your brakes, take a deep breath and free wheel the five miles of pure cycling heaven into Sa Colabra. There are a number of tight hairpin bends to be careful on, but this is a descent you will be telling your great grand children about. Sa Colabra is a small village with a number of cafes and bars and a small beach. There is no other way out other than back up the mountain (unless you catch the boat along the coast, but it is best to check the sailing times should you decide to take this option). It is probably a good idea to check your fitness before you descend as the five mile climb out of Sa Colabra is hard, hot and sweaty. This route is a must for any cyclists who wants a real challenge and if its a challenge you are after this is for you.
